Mystery Cream

Post by prplebird20 »

first of all, HELLO i have not been active for a good long time but i'm back now (yay)
So this mare
https://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/3893939
(who seemed originally seal brown but is now more of a black)
had a foal with this stallion
https://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/3833201
who is a pretty distinct black tobiano
and this foal comes out
https://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/3898894
who very obviously has none of his parents coloring. Could someone take a guess at what happened here? (i know foal colors can change)

First, welcome back!
I say it I think, every time, but it is still true. It's nice to see people are still kicking when they come back. 8-)

Your stallion, Sweet Wonderland, is a smoky black tobiano. He's a carrier of a single cream gene. :D That's the first interesting tidbit you might've not known. You can see he's a cream carrier, because his foal picture shows a black foal coat on the gray-scale, rather than the red-scale.
Take a look at these two images, one is your newborn pic and the other is one of my productions.

For the future, any newborn black that has this silvery-scale black, is a single cream carrier.

Mistletoe, your mare, is indeed a brown. It does look like she's a sooty and not just a really dark brown variation. As she ages, she may begin to look just like a black horse. But you're right, she's a brown.

Your foal came out as negative extension (extension is the black base E/e and E/E). So your foal is red based (e/e). And inherited the cream gene from papa. :D So, you have a cute palomino foal. As he ages, he also may be affected by sooty.

Very nice looking outcome. Congrats!

Oh, and he'll eventually have those gorgeous feathers.
