It started as a question about the crummy foal quest and then it was revealed that we had similar leopard projects as well and then we just got stuck on leopard genetics. LP patterns are way more complex than low GP so there is more to discuss and explore on that topic.
The title of the thread is a bit misleading at this point but I did not think it was that important to start a whole new thread to discuss the leopard pattern in since we had already started to present our progress and results here.

Currently I am trying to breed a line of horses with no pattern genes at all (horses that will only be varnish roan when carrying the LP gene, no snowflakes or white areas). I will use these horses to see how the pattern genes "behave" when they are passed down from only one parent. My guess is that pattern genes interact with each other somehow and perhaps two copies of a similar gene makes up for more white than only one copy of a certain pattern gene.

I have also come to a conclusion, sort of. With the help of the information I got from larissar when asking about a bug with the leopard patterns it looks like the pattern genes are connected to both colour and if the horses have one or two copies of the LP switch. I don't know if there are completely different genes for chestnut and black based coats (or LP/lp and LP/LP) or if the same genes just express themselves differently depending on colour and LP variations.
Either way I can tell for sure that the patterns look different on black and chestnut horses as well as LP/lp and LP/LP with the same base colour.

I briefly considered doing something similar, but junked it immediately. I have way to many projects to work on another... just too many horses ;) but really, can we ever have enough??? I agree that it's probably the most direct way to figure out how the genes actually interact with each other. I also came across that sneaking suspicion too, that some (or all) of the genes for white or pattern as well, need both alleles in order to show.
If you're interested in them. I can age up to a year for any solid from that belgian for the... varnish always shows... varnish. You're welcome to them. Free of charge. That is, if you have need of more. And there is a chance he'll through an all black foal too, especially since I somehow bred chestnut into almost all of my herd... He only carries one E, so he's been throwing nothing but chestnuts yet.

As for the low GP project... I've gotten a couple of five reds and most of my horses are under the 12,999 HGP line... but I have not yet had any born (even unacceptable offspring) below that 11,000 HGP line. I'm just about ready to accept that I've hit a bit of a wall and need additional new blood.

Another acceptable foal from that black belgian. This one (though similar along the neckline) seems to have missed some of the stallion's passage that his half-siblings gained.

Golden Prince

I see nothing else new presenting itself. So I think my next crossover will probably be arabian.

Anyway...

He's on market for 200 obo right now.

Markings of near full leopard from his fathers side.

I have one mare that is only varnish and I have bred her three times so far with stallions that show only varnish as well. So I should have 3 foals at the moment that are not carrying any pattern genes. I don't know yet if any of them are carrying the LP switch gene, only time will tell.

About the low GP I have come to a point where they have 5 reds and all negative stats but I think I will need to add red speed from belgian blood lines and find out which breeds could carry red potential for balance and agility.

It will certainly be interesting to see what the varnish project reveals (hopefully more information than what we expect). Let me know if you want some of my (retired breeding) mares later on to confirm or deny some aspect.

I'm at almost the exact same place as you with the low GP project. I took much of my online time yesterday looking through the 1000 and under sale horses to find some acceptable refresher stock for that.
Feel free to snatch up any of the following. It turns out I have... no... space left. So I have to consider shipping some over to the other account, or just wait until my 15 (older than 20) at-death's-door horses keel. I've briefly looked through pedigree and offspring, if there is any, so they should be 'on the lower end' of the gene scale. Who knows if, or when they may sell. I think some has been up for quite some time.

I will take a look at them and see if I can make some progress. My computer has been broken for a few days so I have not been able to do much work with either project unfortunately. I will give you an update here whenever I have something new to report.

As for crummy foals I am now in the 11,000-12,000 range on my foals and I have two stallions just put up for sale in case anyone can make good use of them, they are both a bit older but since they are boys I figured it wont matter as much as if they where ladies

I got one of them, he will be perfect for that red speed I am looking for.
