Feeding

Post by RoseeDelight »

Hi guys, I have a problem. I just got a barn, and I put most of my horses in it because my pastures in a terrible condition, and... One of my horses' max feed is so low that I can't give him enough feed for 100% energy without crossing the max feed.
How do I fix this? Is there a better combination of feed or something?

You see the red boxes around the Max feed? It means that he's being given more than he can eat and he could be in the stage where it's hard to feed him enough for 100% energy.

Yes, I know what the red boxes mean.
There's a stage in which they're hard to feed?

There are also some very good starting guides and in-depth guides we now have on the subject.
Starting: viewtopic.php?p=149812#149812
That one the feeding area is in the section entitled 'taking your first turn'.
But I think you already have that covered, you're probably ready to read over the in-depth:

If you haven't already.

The worst time to keep feed on a horse is during their first 6 months of life. The only real way to keep them eating enough usually, is to keep them on lush pasture. Sometimes for really big horses or really fast growing stock, even this is difficult. While in training, you'll want to feed weight gain or yellow corn. Sugar is a trainers best friend, while maintaining weight or adjusting weight, yellow corn and weight gain will allow you to feed additional or less with little to no affect on the training regime.
Also, until the horse turns 2 years, he or she will be limited to just how much you can stuff down their gullet. The moment they turn 2, however, their intake usually increases exponentially that you can move them on to a maintenance diet rather than a sugar-high, weight-gaining diet.

So for horses-in-training, you'll likely find it easier to keep them on pasture for awhile. To help maintain temperament or also weight, I move them from pasture to barn at 6 months, but still feed them weight gain for the first year. As a yearling I generally switch them over to yellow corn 40%, weight gain 60%, but I'm aiming for high strung. Then the weight gain can be 5% more or less (to be 105% feed total or 95% feed total) to alter weight accordingly.

Does that cover it?
