But not all bay horses carry the black gene. A black horse is genetically E- aa. E refers to the extension gene. A black horse may be EE or Ee, while a red based horse is only ee. The A (agouti) gene makes a horse bay by restricting the black colour to points (legs, tail, main) . A bay horse may be either AA or Aa. It is only a Aa horse that has the ability to make black offspring.

So:
Aa E- : horse to bay, may have black offspring
AA E- : horse is bay, cannot have black offspring

At least I think so, if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Man! All that sounds so confusing. How would you even know if the horse is AA-E or Aa-E??

As we don't have genetic testing, only by breeding. And I am the wrong person to answer that question as I've never really put much effort into that. If you are breeding two bays and only getting bay offspring, it is likely that at the very least one of the parents AA, if not both.

The easiest way to get there is to find a black horse to breed to, even if crossbreeding. The resulting foal even if bay, will definitely be Aa. Then if you breed to another horse whose parents are black x bay, you will be guaranteed a shot at having a black horse. Ideally, breed the resulting foal back to a black horse, but that may or may not be possible, depending on whats available

ah ok! thanks! If you know anyone with a Black Friesian! lol I guess I could try cross breeding to a black forest horse or black Belgian and then cross breeding until I get the black Friesian....may take a few generations.

ALL BAY horses are black based. You can only see the bay color on black based horses so therefor all BAY horses are black based. Now, you can have a chestnut horse with the bay genes turned on but you can't see it because there is no black for the bay to express itself by. So a chestnut horse MAY pass on a bay gene but it will only be visible on a black horse.

So I can breed any bay horse and have a chance at a black one?? Because I've gone through like 15 horses so far and no blacks :(
