dapples

Post by hikko »

hello,
i'd like to breed for nice well defined dapples of that style:

https://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/1541499

I have a mare and a stallion showing dapples, I guess I'll get some by breeding them together(but that would mean high COI) but if I want to create other lines, what colour should I cross them with to have a chance of dapples showing ? I am not sure of what is involved genetycally is it silver gene on a black + several dilutions?

also are the dapple showing at birth and if not, at what age should they start appearing?

examples of what I'm looking

I'm not really sure the answer to your first question, but I do know of several stallions with dapples, and here's a couple studs:

As for your second question, I think it probably depends on the breeding and when the parents' dapples showed up. For my past horses, their dapples normally started lightly appearing around 6 months and then got more evident as they got older. Hope this helps :)

If you are interested in cross-breeding, I have these two dapple stallions that you are welcome to use!

well one of the goals of this account being dappled andalusians the guys are perfect !

the second one does not carry silver so I guess he shows the soo called "sooty dapples" but the result is stunning and I might try to have both in my lines

Both horses that you've shown are Silver on a Cream and Champagne mix. Enchantress is a Silver Amber Cream (Silver Buckskin Champagne basically) and the other is possibly a Silver Classic Cream (Silver on Black with one Cream and Champagne). If you want dapples to show then you want either the Sooty gene or the Silver gene present. Silver will cause the light dapples like you've shown and Sooty will cause a dark coloration over the horse with the original coat color showing in dapples.

You do not want to cross with a Chestnut or any of the Chestnut-based colors because Silver doesn't show up on them. You'll want to breed with Black or Wild Bay/Bay/Seal bases in order for it to be visible. Silver does have variants which is why some horses have dapples and others don't when showing the gene. You'll want to keep to horses with visible dapples. They'll also show up better on Wild Bay/Bay/Seal bases with at least two dilutions, such as two Cream or a Cream and a Champagne. Silver Smoky Cream (2x Cream on Black with Silver) often gives a gentle golden color that you might enjoy..

Here's some examples of different dapple mixes: Edit: Forgot to add, but I think you'll be able to tell if a horse will dapple by one year of age. I'm positive that it'll show earlier, but sometimes the dapples are rather subtle so allowing your horse that extra bit of time might prove to be a good thing so that their coat can mature more.

this confirms most of what I had understood by myself! thanks a lot for the tips, I think I'll concentrate on the "golden" dapples first...
