Champagne Pearl?

Post by Ealesi »

Tried looking at the color guides, however did not have all photos so I'm clueless. Please note the colors on the parents are placeholders, working on them shortly. If you have any ideas on them as well, I'd appreciate it. Attached are all horses with photos I own or owned while alive that might be relevant. The Grandmother attached has some crazy, CRAZY pearl looking coats thrown foals and grandfoals. That is a project for another day, if anyone wants to team up, I'd love to work on a living color dictionary with them! From what I can tell, there's some snowflake, some PATN1, little bit of everything in this line.

Here's the one in question original horse:

He looks like a gold champagne. There's no foal pictures and no yearling picture, so there is no help there. That said, after seeing quite a few of these colors, I'm fairly certain of the color. That would be champagne on a chestnut coat. And, of course, obviously with Lp.

His dame appears to also be a gold champagne. If you take a look at her yearling photo and compare it to him now, you'll notice that their shading is quite similar.

His sire is an amber champagne. You can see a shading difference on those lower legs. It looks like he might have silver, but these manes from Lp go this way too. The parents aren't any help in that area, so silver on this horse is an unknown.

That's where I wasn't sure about. The silver possibility was a confusing factor. Thanks for the help!

His color is closer to his father's Could he be Amber not Gold? His dam looks a lot lighter, that's also a confusion for me.

Champagne has an added benefit of lightening the coat as the horse ages. That paired with Lp, which also changes the coat as the horse ages, makes it much harder to pin down coat colors when the horse is older, versus when they're younger. :P

But take a look at his lower legs and his sire's lower legs (particularly the gallery image), although it's hard to see, there is actually no change of color on those lower legs for him, when his sire has a color darkening. The reason I suggest chestnut, is because the darkening of the lower legs is a bay trait (the points are black).

I was certain yesterday about is color. Now I'm not too sure. :|

Well, the other decision on the choice between amber and gold is the color of his mane. It's too light to be silver (in my opinion), but is also affected by Lp. Silver doesn't show up on a chestnut horse and a champagne horse will have a lighter mane to begin with as well. And between the two (sire and son), the sire's mane is a bit darker. This could be that he lacked silver, which means that if they're both the same color (amber), then there's no real accounting for that silver (dame is just entirely unknown). But there could also be flaxen, which could account for the shading difference between the two, and that would mean chestnut.

Let's see if another can enlighten us a little.

That is true! I started taking foal photos now, cause hopefully it wont be as confusing next time i ask xD

If you want another doozy confusing color, I have a couple more i can blow your mind with xD I don't know how i got this current weird color scheme, however, I know the starter horses of the line if that would help back trace?

Sometimes it's helpful to strike off some of them, but if there's any NAB or shetland in there, it's rather useless. Both of these AC breeds tend to have all or almost all of the available color gene combinations.

I'll try to tackle the others in another day or two. I'm a bit busy in real life currently. But, that doesn't mean somebody else might get to it first. So...yeah. :P
